The specimen is from the world-famous Hamilton Quarry in eastern Kansas. Upper Pennsylvanian Calhoun Shale, if I'm not mistaken. Shawnee Group. One of the most spectacular and scientifically invaluable fossil finds of all time. Much more interesting than even Archaeopteryx, in my opinion. The eyes of the Hamilton Quarry fish that possessed color vision (Acanthodes bridgei) were most similar to this modern guy--Rhinogobius, which is a genus of primarily freshwater gobies native to tropical and temperate parts of eastern Asia; Acanthodes was an extinct spiny shark, of course: 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
