Unique & Colorful Sierra Petrified Wood

I found this very unique and colorful petrified wood in the high Sierra, very different in color than any other I have seen around the region. So far I have not been able to ID the species since the material is extremely agatized/opalized. Has anyone found anything similar in Califoria or Nevada? Is this as rare as I think it is? Any idea what species? I polished a piece (pictured) and the rest are as found. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forum. GREAT !!! initial post. Frequently when I find petrified wood (Florida) I wonder which tree species it came from. Occasionally I find out, but not very often.

Since there seems to be so much of it, I am hopeful you be more fortunate. There are some rock hounds on the forum.

Gorgeous stuff! Do you know what formation it came from? Aging it would be a first step in narrowing down the possibilities.

If this came from the north eastern border of Cali/Nev. I could understand. North west of Nevada has huge areas of petrified forests which several commercial (pay to dig) opal mines reside. Great finds!
