Along with a little personal history, all fossil related. When I was 2 to 3 years old the family went to the top of the Sandia mountains, east of Albuquerque New Mexico. While We were hiking along the crest, I found this brachiopod- (scale in pictures is a 1/8 inch ruler) This sent Me on a life long quest to find more! When I was 5 the family moved to Sacramento California, which made it hard to pursue fossils. However, every time We came back for a visit with Grandparents I was late for the mountain! I had a nice selection of fossils from this Mississippian formation by the time I reached 10. Here are several samples of thing I collected there... More next post... I have much more from My many trips to the top of the mountain, but they are packed away for now. My next major find was on the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountains of central California, very near Kit Carson pass on hwy 88. This happened when I was 12 years old. I do not know if it is the memory of finding it or of being told of the event in later years, but I do remember carrying that brachiopod around with Me for many years. ( now it sits on a shelf). Back to the story... We went camping at Silver lake, in the Sierra Nevada mountains when I was 12. I made My brother take a hike to the pyroclastic formations east of the lake. At the base of the formation there are several places where trees had piled up during the event. These acted as a filter that allowed leaf impressions to be preserved. I collected several, none of which I could identify. My Dad worked for the Calif board of education, and set up a meeting with the head of the paleontology department at the university of california- Davis. This man Identified the leafs as willow, oak, birch and avocado. He was so excited about My discovery (no fossils had been previously reported from this volcanic formation!) that My dad had to take us up to the site the next weekend. When I next returned in My 20's there was a well defined path straight to the site. This was My first contribution to science, because the Paleontologist kept My leaf fossils. I also found My first petrified wood in this area. willow leaf avocado leaf Petrified wood.. It is late for Me so I will have to continue this later.... They had just graveled the driveway, where I found lots of bone fragments and a few shark teeth. With great excitement I showed My finds to everyone, and grandpa made the mistake of saying that he knew where they could be found. Two days later, when Grandma got tired of listening to Me, We went to Scotts Valley and I got to dig for shark teeth for the first time. At one time I had 600 good teeth from this location. (Thanks to the nice people here on TFF I now know that this is the late miocene age lower Santa Margarita sandstone.) Scale is 1/8 inch ruler. Fish tooth plates. Sea Lion teeth. Shark teeth. more.... On this trip the family stopped to see the white sands dunes. While We were there I found this in a concreted gypsum at the bottom of the dunes. It is a naturally formed trace fossil. When I was 15 the Family and some friends went to the Kettleman hills in the southern san joaquin valley. The rest of the people were ridding dirt bikes while I climbed the hills looking for-- You guessed it-- fossils. This is the only one I have anymore. more to come... The scallop is late miocene (I think) and found in California's San Joaquin valley. I need to be more careful about the location and age information, My bad. There is one trip that I went on when I got My drivers licence. but I have not taken any pictures yet. (I will get back to that later.) In the meanwhile,... When I was in My late 20's I made an attempt to find shark tooth hill, all that I knew was it was east of Bakersfield. I found a whale vert. and a shell bed that was 10 - 15 feet thick. I was lost somewhere north east of the round mountain silt formation. I do not have the vert. anymore but I found this tooth in the shell layer.. On the last day that I got to look for shark teeth in the lower Santa Margarita, I was taken to a site uphill from there. Where I found this nice little fossil. When I was 33 I learned of a place called "Warfield Springs" in south west Wyoming. I had always dreamed of finding a nice fish fossil- so I planned a 9 day "vacation" to fulfill that dream...and a couple of other dreams as well. I drove 24 hours to get there, spent 1 day digging and splitting and 7 days to get back-- zigzagging across Utah and Nevada. continued next post... Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." I first started collecting minerals when I was 40 and didn't get into fossils seriously until I was almost 50. Thank You Roger. During this period of My life I was collecting in a void, no one else in My family had any interest in rocks. And being in an area where there are no blatantly interesting rock very few other kids in My school had any interest either. It is amazing that I continued to collect. I remember in My late 20's My Dad said "You're an adult know. It's time You gave up that stupid childhood hobby.". I am soooo glad that I did not listen to him.
