Some Rocks From My Collection-- All Fossils

Recommended Posts

On My way home from Warfield springs I visited several places that I had found references to in My fossil books.

There were several fossils found at the locations that I stopped at, but only 3 of the sites that I found good quality fossils-- The Bear mountains, somewhere east of Cedar city, and the House range (Antelope springs.)

I can not find the Bear mountain pieces.

Here are the "east of Cedar City" finds. It was near a military test range-- "Unexploded ordinance" signs were all over the place!

(sorry but that is the only one that I had a picture of-- but it is also the only species that I found there.)

Here are some of the better pieces from Antelope springs. These pictures represent several trips to this location.

Thank You Roger.

During this period of My life I was collecting in a void, no one else in My family had any interest in rocks. And being in an area where there are no blatantly interesting rock very few other kids in My school had any interest either. It is amazing that I continued to collect.

I remember in My late 20's My Dad said "You're an adult know. It's time You gave up that stupid childhood hobby.". I am soooo glad that I did not listen to him. Rocks are the only thing that keeps Me sane!

Nice dad!

I like that plate with the agnostids as much as the others... You must have done some kind of prep on these, how did you do it?

Thank You, it is one of My favorites also. :D I did no prep on it except the hole in the middle- which was a "bug" shaped mound when I found it. But there was no trilobite under the cover. ( Did You notice the complete little Elrathia kingi in the lower left ?).

Some more finds from the House range of western Utah...

One of the best finds that I have had is this Eocrinoid from Antelope springs.

post-16416-0-00688000-1442966703_thumb.jpg

And this was found south of the others in Miller canyon. I think there are 2 types of trilobite in these.

(I posted these in the ID section but nobody could ID them.)

After My visits to the House range My fossil hunting went on a break until I joined the El Dorado co. Mineral and Gem Society. This group has a wonderful field trip program with many fossil sites on their lists.

The first field trip that I went on was too fulfil one of My longtime wishes to find an amonoid.

On this trip We went to Fossil Hill, Humboldt mountains Nevada. An early Triassic formation. It was a unusual experience for Me, as it was the first time I had other people around Me while I was hunting fossils. (There were around 30 people on the trip.)

Pictures to follow...in a little while

Sorry Guys I missed these before...

Nice collection! .. love the Santa Margarita material, hard to get by anymore. My first collecting trip in the US was in the foothills of the Sandia mountains.

Thank You. It has been a long time since I dug there. What did You find in the Sandia foothills?

Nice dad!

He finally changed his mind when He saw Me sell a single crystal for over 500$, and I started to make silver jewelry.

( He does not complain about My rockhounding trips anymore! )

Stay tuned for further developments!!

Mostly Pennsylvanian crynoid fragments (Estancia basin).

I found a lot of those on top of the mountain also. Did You ever hunt along the crest?

To all of the people that are following this string--

I just went through some more of My boxes and found some more things from the previous locations that I will post as soon as I get them pictured.

Did a quicky on this piece from the lower Santa Margarita sandstone. It is probably the rarest thing that I found there, for this location that is.

It is a piece of petrified driftwood.

Will get back to this later.

That must have been one special crystal, What was it?

As far as I know, yes.

That must have been one special crystal, What was it?

It was a 5 inch long rutilated quartz crystal that I found in the Sierra Nevada mountains. (Take a look at My string in "Rocks and Minerals" titled "Some Rocks from My collection-- not fossils", the second and third pictures in post 2., to see a couple of the crystals from the same pocket)

Hey Tony,

I've been up there but never collected. I've heard of a number of good finds on the crest. I primarily focus on elasmobranchs of which there are a number of sites here in NM that turned out somewhat productive (mostly San Juan Basin).

Do You have a string where these are shown?

I have not been able to rock-hound in New Mexico as much as I would like-- it is a long drive!

I have had a hectic day and will try to continue with this string soon.

Hey All,

I need to do a little back tracking at this time.

Another brachiopod from "west of cedar City".

A few weird things, two pearls and a fish vertebra from the shell bed on My failed trip to Sharktooth Hill..

An unidentified thing that was found in Utah, but I do not remember exactly where.

The things that I circled are gill rakers from Cetorhinus (basking shark).
