ynot
Some more retrogression... On My obtaining driver's licence I took My Dads car and tried to find a place called Fossil Hill. Do to poor directions I did not get to the correct location, but I did get to the Humboldt Mountains. I was hoping to get My first ammonite. I got this instead, which was fine by Me.. And then I found this... Next post Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." ynot
I was very pleased when I found this piece... The ammonites in it are not very good but the other thing is "wow"!!! ynot
The things that I circled are gill rakers from Cetorhinus (basking shark). gill.jpg Thanks -- I have had those for 30 years wondering what they were. And I have been looking for one in the STH micro matrix, when I already had four!! A couple of finds that I missed in the chronology of this story... From west gate, on hwy 50 west of Austin Nevada... Another one next post... 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." ynot
This was found at the north end of Sedona canyon, south of Flagstaff Arizona on a trip to New Mexico to visit Family. I present this with special thanks to Ludwigia for the fantastic preparation He did on it!! That is all for right now, but I will continue this later, Thanks All for looking. Wrangellian
I love the Triassic ammos too... Something you don't get to see much of and usually not very well preserved. Did you say these were Lower Triassic, and are those Monotis clams in pic1 of #56? If that ID is correct, they are Upper Triassic.

Did you say these were Lower Triassic, and are those Monotis clams in pic1 of #56? If that ID is correct, they are Upper Triassic. According to what I have found in the literature the brachiopods in that slab are DAONELLA AND PTERIA. I was wrong on the age though-- it is MIDDLE TRIASSIC according to this paper - MIDDLE TRIASSIC MOLLUSCAN FOSSILS OF BIOSTRATIGRAPHIC SIGNIFICANCE FROM THE HUMBOLDT RANGE, NORTHWESTERN NEVADA By N. J. SILBERLING and K. M. MCHOLS which identifies the formation as-- " Middle Triassic section in the Humboldt Range, northwestern Nevada. These fossiliferous strata are assigned to the Fossil Hill Member and upper member of the Prida Formation, which here forms the oldest part of the Star Peak Group." Here is another fossil from there.. Tony PS Can I blame this one on the dyslexia also? Edited September 25, 2015 by ynot Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Wrangellian
If that's the case then sometimes I have dyslexia too OK, Daonella works. Nice orthocone. I am even more envious of your access to that stuff. Wasn't too long ago that I was unaware that orthocones survived the Permian extinction.

Doesn't everybody to one degree or another, but when the speed limit sign says 54 or 57 then Ya got problems! Glad I could get one right. Thanks- It is the best one I found and they were not common from what I saw. I want to reiterate that the fossils shown do not necessarily reflect the finds from 1 trip, and I am just listing the first trip to the sites that I have collected at. The next location was a solo trip to a Jurasic(?) site in northern California that was supposed to have some good ammonites. I still need to get some pictures of this material, so will be back when I can get to that. Thanks to All that are watching. ynot
On the next trip in this chronology I went to a place called Hay Fork, near the Trinity river in northern California. This is a jurassic mudstone deposit, and the majority of the fossils are also mud (casts). I found a lot of razor clams and 1 suspected ammonite. I also found a place where a larger animal had been interred, but there were only a couple of ribs left, the rest had washed down the creek. More... FossilDAWG
I'm going to take a stab at the Jurassic ammonite ID and suggest it may be a Cadoceras. No idea about the species. Don

Don Thank You, I had no idea as to the identity and thought it was to much of a fragment for any identification. To All that are interested, I have not abandoned this thread, I just got distracted with the trilobites and Sharktooth Hill micros. I will continue the story in a couple of days. Thanks for looking. ynot
Hey-hi Folks, Here is the next chapter of this story. Over the next several years I went on many field trips with the EL Dorado gem and mineral society. I went on trips to - Cedarville, Greenhorn creek, Ebbetts pass and kramer junction in California-- the Black rock desert and Coaldale junction in Nevada-- and Joseph city in Arizona, all for petrified wood. Some of these locations were "rest" stops, some were side trips and some were the days destination. Here are pictures of a few of the nicer thing found on these trips.... Greenhorn creek... Most of the wood there is covered with micro Quartz crystals and is called "sugar wood" by the other club members. There is a lot of well preserved opalized wood here, but it was badly broken up by the hydraulic mining of the Tertiary river gravel where the wood was deposited, so I did not keep any. A burle of "sugar" wood Two 3 foot and a 2 foot long chunks of "sugar" wood more... Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough."
