ynot
The next collecting that I did was on a solo trip to Arizona and New Mexico. Most of the trip was chasing crystals but I did get a little fossil hunting in. I went "home" to Magdalena NM to look for smithsonite at the Kelly mine. This is a copper/gold mine that switched to zinc oxide (smithsonite). The intrusive mineralization invaded a fossil laden devonian (?) limestone. While I was looking for minerals I kept an eye out for fossils but only found one.... This 1/2 inch skeletal crinoid stem piece covered with smithsonite, next the Chinle formation in Arizona..... 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." ynot
On the way back to California I stopped at a place near a little city called Joseph city to look for "Arizona picture wood" from the Chinle formation, this is the same formation that makes up the Petrified forest national monument, but is outside of the park area. This 1/3 round has a very good cellular preservation that is unusual for Chinle wood... and a polished slab from the previous piece.. More.... 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." ynot
Another small piece of petrified wood from Arizona.... I did find a bit more than this but the rest got cut up for cabochons. Hey Tony, nice post with all kinds of cool finds! Saw the last clam photo and it reminds me of some of the Buchiids I used to find a little further south...Do you know if that was Franciscan Complex material? Here's a reference that has some good comparative photos in the back of the genus Buchia but maybe not in the same area you collected in. http://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0647a/report.pdf Regards, Chris
ynot
Hey Chris, Thank You for the link-- neet article. I seem to remember something about the formation being part of the franciscan formation. But I do not know for certain. Tony Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys."
