Some Rocks From My Collection-- All Fossils

The next collecting that I did was on a solo trip to Arizona and New Mexico. Most of the trip was chasing crystals but I did get a little fossil hunting in. I went "home" to Magdalena NM to look for smithsonite at the Kelly mine. This is a copper/gold mine that switched to zinc oxide (smithsonite). The intrusive mineralization invaded a fossil laden devonian (?) limestone. While I was looking for minerals I kept an eye out for fossils but only found one....

This 1/2 inch skeletal crinoid stem piece covered with smithsonite,

On the way back to California I stopped at a place near a little city called Joseph city to look for "Arizona picture wood" from the Chinle formation, this is the same formation that makes up the Petrified forest national monument, but is outside of the park area.

This 1/3 round has a very good cellular preservation that is unusual for Chinle wood...

Very very nice collection!

Thank You.

Here are some more things from My continuing story...

The club got access to some "oil company" land in the Kettelmen hills near Coallinga, California. Mostly shell fossils, but there were supposed to be shark and desmostylist teeth- but no one found any.

Hi,

Your sand dollar is a Dendraster.

Coco

Thank You for the identification.

There were 100's of thousands of them there, I only took a hundred or so.

Thank You.

I will- but have been busy with a rock show and other things and have not had a chance to do any box digging or much photography for a couple of weeks.

I will continue this story when I can get the time.

Hey All,

I just wanted to say that I will continue this thread in a little while.

Lately I have been unusually busy (for this time of year).

Good luck on the hunt!

That was it for this location.

Next are several trips for petrified wood from A to W or something like that.

To be continued....

Hey Tony, nice post with all kinds of cool finds!

Saw the last clam photo and it reminds me of some of the Buchiids I used to find a little further south...Do you know if that was Franciscan Complex material?

Here's a reference that has some good comparative photos in the back of the genus Buchia but maybe not in the same area you collected in.

Hey Chris,

Thank You for the link-- neet article.

I seem to remember something about the formation being part of the franciscan formation. But I do not know for certain.
