More 10 Leggers

Now for some really dumb (but super good) luck. I was just sitting at home one day watching tv when my buddy called and said he was at a garage sale where a guy was selling all kinds of fossils. I drove down there as fast as I could, but most of the good stuff was already gone! Dang!!! After going through all the leftover stuff about 4 tmes, I asked the wife of this guy, (he was busy at the time) if he had any fossils in th attic or basement that were too heavy to bring out into the yard. She told me that her husband had many boxes of lobster concretions in the basement but that no one would want them. My jaw just about dropped to the floor!!! I told her that I may be interested and if I could take a look. I went down to the basement and saw them immediatly. There sat 10 boxes all neat in a row. Wow!!! I started looking in the boxes and unwrapping the newspaper (all from 1972) and realized that there really were lobster in them! Wow!!! He had busted most of them open and then taped them back together and wrapped them. I bought all 10 boxes. How much you ask? 5 dollars per box!!!! WoooooHoooooo!!! Talk about being in heaven!!! After many months of prepping I came away with some really nice specimens, but most were what I would call 'junk, or b-grade lobsters'. And again, I think I invented a couple more new cuss words? It still amazes me every time I think about this garage sale!

Here are a series of pics of prepping these critters. Once I unwrapped the newspaper, and then the tape that held them together, they would literaly fall apart. They were like fossil puzzles. But with lots of patients and lots of glue and lots of time, some of them turned out purty nice!

Good job man!!! :)

Thanks for the compliment MB. I did find one lobster that was different from all the rest. I also heard that the name 'Hoploparia' was changed to 'Paleonepherops'? But after all the lobsters I prepped out, this one was different. Im thinking it may be a female, but also was told that it may be a new species too? I just dont know. Im one of those guys who likes to find things and prep them but am really bad at the study of them.

Great work man !!!

I'm not expert in macruran, just I'm knowing few names of braquiuran fossils, but I think it is diferent of the other lobster you show us.

Let me time to see what it is, otherwise, this spring I will meet a scientist specialist on fossil macrurans, perhaps the most specialist.

And I will show your photos if I have your permission.

Congratulations again.

Hey Sillious. thanks. But hey, I just happend to go out to Utah this last summer and found what for me is some nice trilos. I even found some in the 'red beds' and some others in the drum mts. I should have them prepped sometime this winter to be able to show you, but im sure you have some much nicer trilos. Ive always wanted to hunt the trilos big time, but never seem to find the time. Some other fossils are always gettin in my way! Dang!!

Hey Roz, I will do that. It may take awhile though? I also have a couple of crabs that are still being studied from way back when. Its super cool to find new species. I will post those too when they get published.

  • 2 weeks later...

More dumb luck. I was at a fossil show in Eureka California and went around to all the dealers to see what they had and got to talking to this one guy from Oregon. We started talking about fossil crabs and he told me that he had some cretaceas shrimp concretions from the west side of Mt. Shasta. I asked him if I could see them and he brought out about 4 from underneath one of his tables. Apon inspection I could tell that one would be purty dang cool for a prep project. After a lengthy conversation he just gave me the one I wanted!! Wow!! I went home and immediatly went about prepping it. It came in two halfs and I had to cut out the 'arm' and pieces of leg from the top piece of rock and then glue it back onto the bottom piece and started airscribing from there. The thing that amazed me the most was that that the tail end was in dang good shape. Ive found many shrimp concs, but 99.9% of them are just a claw or two with maybe some 'shrimp hash' but never a tail end, but this one looked like it was articulated with tail!!! I had only seen that a couple of times before so I was quite excited!!! Here are some pics.

Hey N.AL.Hunter. I certainly dont mean to make you cry. Ive just been a super hard core fossil hunter over the years. Its one of those things that is always a top priority for me! I used to be a hard core trout and steelhead fisherman many years ago, but after I found my very first fossil, (an impression of a clam), that was it, I was absolutly hooked and have been fishing maybe 3 times since then. My fishing nowadays is with hammer and chisle! HA!! What a beautiful and super great way to go fishing!!! Here is a very nice Myoplosis about 11 inches long that I ' hammerd and chiseled' out a couple of years ago.
