Mahantango Fossil ID (4)

Recommended Posts

Found at Seven Stars, Pa location.

Pics show top view with rippled circular area, bottom/looking into textured area (it almost looks like a smooth shell was lodged into the center) and last pic of the back of the matrix.(the lighter area on back is where I was trying to chip away but then decided to leave well enough alone)

Size is 1" in diameter.

TIA for your help!

M2R,

Actually, this is another pelecypod (circle item) with a cross-section through a Pleurodictyum sp.

Pleurodictyum corals normally grew on top of other shells, their preferred substrate was the shells of a gastroppod (snail) called Paleozygopleura.

Your examples are a bit unique, as I have not seen many attached or in association with pelecypods.

Another cool find.

Regards,

Tim is right.

You have a Pleurodictyum tabulate coral that grew on a pelecypod which is more common in the mudstone of Seven Stars than the worm tube encrusted variant.
Nice find!

Thank you both so much for your input!

Having a name that goes with the fossil gives me the ammo I need to be able to do some research!

Yay!!
