Fossil Monster Skull ID !

Maybe its purpose is that of a hyped-up roadside attraction? Tourist destinations in the US have a long tradition of "carny-style" promotion. I simply cannot believe that they actually believe it is what they say it is, nor can I believe that they invested a fortune in it.

Ouch...I hope not. I think that would be worse than an error.

  • 1 month later...

Looks to be an artifact for me,containing old bones assembled and carved in a way to make it be mysterious. Maybe It may have something to do with the mythology of Madagascar. (?)

Yeah, that seems like that.

I agree with Chas! Just seems strange they would think it was an extremely rare and valuable dinosaur skull without consulting an expert. I'm guessing jpc was not the first to warn them, and I'm guessing they probably never even replied. IF that is the case, it is very sad they would mislead their customers and the public that visit their museum.

The newspaper story Mikey showed us says they are calling it one of only three Majungatholus skulls in the world. Ouch. I am preparing to send them an email.... I promise to be nice.

I just sent them an email.

Have you heard back from them jpc? It would be interesting to see what they have to say about it.

Really? The place I worked at does intense X-rays, cat scans and even electric microscope tests before it buys an item even for £100+?!? If an item is plus £1000 we even hire trusted experts... The clients want to know if the object is real and it's our job to make sure they don't pay too much for it... We had one piece (not a fossil) selling in one of the top auctions in France for a stupid amount of money and they sent it to us to take a look at it before they sold it... The thing was looked at by many experts and they all loved it but when we put it through our X ray we found several 20th century nails hammered through the middle... safe to say the price fell by about 80% when we found it was a composite with replaced parts in the middle... The owner was not happy with us, luckily i didn't work there at the time. XD I don't know how american museums work but someone obviously didn't go down the right paths when buying this object. In England we have started to never buy objects and just rely on donations... Even if they are fake we can put them on display for people to touch or to call out fakes.
