Vincent Vos
Hi, I just signed in on fossilforum to see whether anybody is able to help me ID the fossil in the picture. Although I´ve read the guidelines on posting pics I'm afraid I can't offer any better pictures since the fossil in question is not in my posession and I was only able to take the picture attached. I did some checking on the internet, and my (very not expert) guess is it might be the upper jaw (part of skull) of some kind of ground sloth. The fossil was dragged up from the Orthon River in the northern Amazon of Bolivia, while dragging for gold. Apparently at the time they also found other parts of the animal including ribs, but it would be very difficult to retrieve any of this. I'd appreciate any suggestions on what this might be. Fossildude19
Unfortunately I cannot help with an ID. I took the liberty of brightening your pics a bit. Hopefully, someone will chime in on this soon for you. LordTrilobite
Well it's definitely a skull. It also looks like mammal. Other than that I dunno. Maybe other members will recognise the tooth type. Olof Moleman AKA Lord Trilobite
abyssunder
Welcome to the Forum! I think that skull could belong to an Archaeohyracid (notoungulata), like Archaeohyrax suniensis, one of the most abundent mammalians in the fauna of Salla, Bolivia. http://dcpaleo.org/archaeohyracidae/ " We are not separate and independent entities, but like links in a chain, and we could not by any means be what we are without those who went before us and showed us the way.
