Houston Museum of Natural History

Recommended Posts

I visited Houston, TX at the beginning of November of this year and decided to visit the Houston Museum of Natural History. It was worth the trip. It is a beautiful museum with great exibits. Especially the Paleontology Hall. The exhibits were great, nice variety and the vertebrates were excellent. MY only gripe is that it it dark in there , makes for highlighting the exhibits but murder on cell phone pictures. If you go to shoot pix use a camers with a good low light setting. I apologize for a couple of the pix but see above. I shot these pix to highlight the museum and not to provide fossil identification. So enjoy the pretty fossils.

Great photos Herb. Gives me a good idea. I have some nice photos from the Cleveland Museum of Natural history. I might have to get them up.

Yes, Houston has some great fossils. They got a fantastic collection of trilobites from a local trilobite collector named Fred (i forget his last name). I am not much of a minerals guy, but their mineral exhibit is also stunning.

very nice images Herb, looks like a good museum.

Just a suggestion could we start a Museum thread, something like "museum's of the world" and then we could start to build a library of museums and people in other country's can have a virtual tour of museum's that we might never see. Just a thought.

Thanks for sharing Herb

That's definitey a really good idea. Sometimes it can be difficult to know which museums are most worth it.

I think that "museum's of the world" would be a great thread. There have been other posts about great Museum's and to have them in one thread, would be great. I am getting some of my CMNH photos ready to post. B)

Sound great. I have a number of photos of maybe 5 noteable museums worth putting in such a thread. I could go ahead and start a thread but I'll have to dig up some of my photos. I have some great photos of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris. Might be a good one to start with.

A forum for museums! that works as well. Great!

I hope it takes off! It is something I have been thinking about for a while. One thing we've kicked around is to re purpose the under-utilized (and now defunct) "Links" feature for Museum websites, after the impending software upgrade. These virtual tours can be a good adjunct to that idea, with cross-links to connect the two.

  • 4 weeks later...

HMNS is a beautiful museum. When they added the Morian Hall of Paleontology, they doubled the square footage of the museum. I believe that Dr. Robert Bakker is now the Curator of Paleontology there. I actually met him there once. He just happened to be sitting in the downstairs hallway. He was kind enough to take a picture with me and my daughter.

They have an overlook above the dinosaurs. My kids and I like to sit up there and draw the fossils.

Frostyoceras, you will not be disappointed!
