2 pieces in a cretaceous jaw puzzle...mosasaur or fish? tx

Kinda cool- I found these 2 fragments around 1,000 feet apart in a creek. I just discovered they match up. I assume this is a jaw fragment with a tooth socket exposed? Can we tell if it's mosasaur or bony fish? From eagle ford group of late cretaceous. Thanks!

Pretty sure you have a premaxilla from a Xiphactinus. You are seeing the root of the tooth split in half. I've circled the premax on this drawing....

snarge that's good work! This would be one big fish. Hopefully I'll find more of it.

Xiphactinus beat me to it, that is from a large fish for sure, nice find. Posted a pic of a split Mos. root to show the difference

One cool by product of multi part finds is that they give you some idea of the effect of tumbling vs. distance in that venue, allowing you to make an educated guess of distance to the source if the downstream piece is differentially more tumbled.
