Paul,

This was mentioned recently,... HERE.

I'll restate my answer from that thread here, for those that didn't see the first thread. (Easy to do, with the volume of new content on here these days!) :)

"While it was a good site for basic information to begin research, the information is very old in many cases, and sites may no longer exist due to construction, overgrowth, or any number of reasons.

Luckily,... This site is practically the same thing.

If you are worried about this going away as well, you can download the entire list of sites into an excel spreadsheet, or a .csv file."

  • 2 years later...

 **** UPDATE! ****

The "Fossilsites" website is back up, with a different URL.

You can find it here, at http://www.fossilspot.com/index.html.

It is nearly, (if not completely) identical to Donald Kenney's Fossil web page.

Just checked it out. Much of the North Carolina information is either outdated or completely wrong. For instance they list one site in Craven County near Ft Barnwell on the banks of the Cape Fear River. The Cape Fear River is no where near Craven County, at least 2 hours away from Ft Barnwell.

I agree- same with the info on Illinois.A lot of the info from Illinois appears to have come out of the 1964 Edition of Fossils in America,

When dealing with these sites, it is best to remember that the information is very old, and likely no longer accurate.

However, it is a good starting place for learning  where to focus your searches. ;)

Some of the info seems to have been (correctly or incorrectly) guessed at from even more minimal older data. I'm fine with that. If there were an easy go-to resource online for beginners to go and find all the good fossil sites, there'd be nothing left!

Using common sense, even old and outdated information will be useful. Sixgills example is a good one. Someone typed "Cape Fear" instead of "Neuse". I'd call this a typo and have seen plenty even in the scientific lit.
