Guguita2104
I found these fossils last weekend in Praia da Consolação, near Peniche (Kimmerdgian layers) and I labelled them as solitary corals. However I read in some sites that rudists are pretty common in that location. For that I'm a bit confuse, because I never understood the main differences between rudists and solitary corals. Can someone explain me these (and Id my fossils)? abyssunder
The difference between a solitary rugose coral and a rudist, in a few words, is that the latter is a marine heterodont bivalve with totally different morphology. Here are comparative examples: Rudist Rugose coral What you have there are Horn corals (rugose corals), IMO, but if you said they are from Kimmeridgian layers probably they're solitary Scleractinian corals (Stony corals), not Rudists.
