The Clypeaster looks like it was totally covered in matrix! How did you know which big matrix to bring home to find a Clypeaster inside?

Stephanie the Clypeaster when i found, had only 1cm exposed...

I know the max size of a Clypeaster here, so I imagine the area it have and I beggin working ... I open a trace, giving some margin, to take a block with the matrix and the fossil... This work take some time to ensure that does not hit the fossil... After that the preparation will give some work and take very time.

You must be very skilled, would love to see in situ pics and the extracted block before prep!

Stephanie i'll gonna take some pictures in situ to the blocks with echinoids, next times i find it. I don't have a good camera so i normally don't take "in situ" pictures.

This first block are the way i remove it and the second are the atual state. I have to finish the preparation.

In these case the matrix are close to the real size but i have 2 to prepare that are in 2 huge blocks... In this situation i have to reduce the matrix until i get close the fossil... After that begins the meticulous preparation. It's a longer process.

Wow ! I love this topic. I'm a Belgian living in Portugal for 3 years now. I've been collecting fossils in Belgium, France and many more countries in Europe for more than 30 years. Mostly sharkteeth, wish are verry common in the north of Belgium. I'm happy to hear that they can be found in Portugal too, and I must say, you found nice specimens. Now I have to find out where to find them ... :meg:

This looks like a Ptychodus teeth to me. Was it found in Cretaceous or Paleocene deposits ? Nice specimen !

Always neat to see your finds! Especially with those pink hues!

Thank you! :dinothumb:

Portugal are a rich country in fossils but the good material it is very rare to find. We have here Miocene, Cretaceous and Jurassic formations.

That fossil is not a Ptychodus. I think those teeth do not exist in Portugal.

That fossil is a puffer fish mouth plate from Miocene. Some examples:

For me it has been a weak year of fossil finds.

A nice piece found in march.

A complete ray mouthplate.

Nice find!

Can We see the prepped out picture?

Does the color fade?

Thanks

I'm still preparing.

The color it's a little opaque. I will put paraloid at the end to highlight the colors.
