I would really appreciate some help discovering what this discovery is. I found one in a limestone chunk a few years ago and never saw one until I found a spot that's filled with these things. They have some really nice calcite and a couple exceptional quartz crystals inside some of them and they break away easily from the matrix which appears to be in most cases part of the animal like in outer shell but the encasement or shell is usually pretty thick and there's usually more on one side than the other. Another unusual characteristic is they usually have parallel ridges formed that run lengthwise and some have spiky bumps on those ridges. Also found with nice horn corals. Jefferson County KY.

Photos will be necessary for ID.
Descriptions just don't do it.

If you have issues, it is usually due to the file size.
Make sure they are below 2 MB in size.

If that doesn't work, feel free to email the pics to me (check my profile, at the bottom of my page, for my email address.)

It is a dubious ID. Dicey enough with images...

Not looking like a stromatoporoid to me.

Maybe flowstone? or infilled burrow?

it is the cylindrical stromatoporoid, Beatricea sp. Nice piece also. I have found them on both Taylorsville and Bardstown roads. They are not common.

BTY, you can find it referenced in "Guide to the Rocks and Fossils of Jefferson Co. Kentucky, Southern Indiana, and Adjacent Areas," by James and Barbara Conkin. It's in U of L's library

I agree, - Great job, Herb. I had no idea about cylindrical stromatoporoids either.

PCJR65 sent me some more pictures of oddities he has come across.

Any locals ( Herb?) have any idea on these??

last photo has corals and stromatoporoids/stromatolites. The next to last looks stromatolitic to me, would be interesting cross sectioned and polished.
