Despite the rosy picture painted by the bottom article,
the worst reason for a person to go into geology
is because they want to make money. It needs to
be because they enjoy being a geologist or Earth
scientist of some sort. Because boom and bust nature
of energy and commodities markets and government
budgets, there are going be both lean times and
bountiful times. Only if you enjoy being a geologist
will survive the lean times with your sanity intact.
In addition, like a wise farmer, a geologist needs to
squirrel away capitol of some sort during the boom
times in planning for possible lean times. If the lean
times are not as long and bad as planned for, you
will then have even more money for retirement.
