judgesteve
Hi any help greatly appreciated. This morning on the coast between Sandsend and Kettleness I found the following nodule with the exposed fossil. I am hoping this is a mammoth tooth but have my doubts - can anyone help me please. Kind regards Steve
Auspex
I suspect that what you have is an imprint of an ammonite. Note that there are other shelly bits in the matrix. judgesteve
Thanks Auspex - I was on those lines until a 'geologist' on the beach told me it was mammoth. I think the other matrix is ammonite and shell as you say so would of been a new species of mammoth haha. I am going to try and identify the type as I cannot see any edge ridge on this fossil. TqB
Definitely ammonite, from the shape of the ribs it looks like a large Harpoceras - the keel was probably a bit further round. PS Yes, there are quite a few UK members here. Edited March 12, 2016 by TqB Tarquin
Terry Dactyll
I agree with Tarquin.... It is the impression of a Harpoceras... Cheers Steve... And Welcome if your a New Member...
