Fossil Hunting in Eastern Iowa

Recommended Posts

Last summer, a huge rainstorm made the river near where I live flood. After the water level had gone down dramatically, I grabbed my gear and started searching! It was so exciting, I found an almost complete hexagonaria and an almost complete bryozoan! I also found some giant sponges that I beautifully polished. Among other things I found were hexagonaria and bryozoan pieces, crinoid stems, and horn coral. Man! I had a lot of work to do cleaning, labeling, and organizing them in my collection!

I don't have regular access to the internet so It might take some for me to post any pictures. But yeah, I'd be happy to post some pictures. :)

Looking forward to seeing them! Please put in this post, so we know what is going on. Most of my pics need to be resized down to 25% or so to be uploaded onto the forum - just saying, I learned that the hard way and you don't need to get frustrated!

Also, something for scale in the pic like a ruler edge or quarter. :-)

Something tells me you'll be exploring that river more often now. Nice finds.

WoW! I just LOVE the coral in picture #6 - does help to label the pictures. :-)

And you make jewelry from these?!?

Would love to see the jewelry! :-D

No jewelry. I just polished it so you can see it better. I polished the first one and second to last one I posted.

I'm with Ms. Bev, #6 pic is very nice indeed. I used to live in Waverly and loved looking for fossils as a kid.

Great finds.
