Oklahoma permian from Jesuslover340's auction

Hey Hi Y'All,

As some of You should know I won a bag of clay from the Oklahoma permian that Jl340 put up in an auction to benefit the Fossil Forum. After washing the clay off I had about 1/3 cup of matrix to search. As per some advice from Marco sr. -I used a fine screen to sift the material. There were quite a lot of nice little things in it.

Here is the first pictures of the things that I found in the micro matrix that I won in the auction.

The scale in pictures is a millimeter ruler.

Scales...

Thank You-- it was fun to search. No -- I just have limited time to set up and use My microscope.

Thanks for the matrix.

There is still a debate on the id of these teeth. Check out this thread.

Orthocanthus compressus

There are two different Orthacanthus species from the Lower Permian freshwater deposits of Oklahoma and Texas, Orthacanthus compressus and O. platypternus. Orthacanthus compressus teeth have a thicker, fatter, and rounder root, whereas Orthacanthus platypternus teeth have a thin, flat root. I think the tooth ynot posted is from O. platypternus.

I'm confused also. I'm leaning toward fish for most of these teeth (like your first tooth above) with a few amphibian teeth mixed in. However I haven't seen features that can help you for sure make the determination other than doing a cross section. That being said, the base of your second tooth above is different enough looking from the fish teeth that I think it is something else.

I find the texture of the second piece interesting.

That is all that I have pictures of for the time being, but there is more to show.

Stay tuned!
