It may be deer but Rich told me once that a flat cuboid indicated predator in this thread. http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/42376-calcaneum-crab-claw/ Sorry , 3.5 inches in Length Edited April 3, 2016 by Shellseeker 1 The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"

Harry Pristis
It's a deer (Odocoileus sp.) calcaneum. It doesn't much resemble its carnivore homolog. 2 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest

Shellseeker
I am making the images of bones in my collection. Thanks Harry, I had been told that it was deer, but felt I wanted a real expert to comment on this.. I never really understood -- it is the flat top that differentiates, the deer calcaneum seems to be "pointier" . Harry Pristis
I haven't see all artiodactyl calcanea, but the ones with which I am familiar are 'pointy.' 1 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
