South Florida creek hunting

I finally got around to taking some pictures of what I found while creek hunting in south Florida. I've made two trips with my fossil hunting partner down to this particular creek. On the second trip we met up with jcbshark and his dad and had a fun time hunting with them. Of course I forgot to take any pictures of the site but will try to do so the next time I'm there. What makes this site unusual for me is the way the shell layer is exposed in the high banks of the creek. It's wild to be able to just walk up to the bank and see large shells in perfect condition just poking out of the dirt. Really wish I'd taken a picture of it.

My favorite shell find between the two trips is a large lighting welk that is in near perfect condition. When I spotted the shell only a small portion of the end was sticking out of the bank and I had to very carefully pry it out with my shovel.

Here's some more of my shell finds. The The smallest of the murex is a close second for my favorite shell find. It is in perfect condition and has pale blue patches on it.

My best vertibrate find on the first trip was a sperm whale tooth that at the time I though was only a partial. It wasn't until I got home that I discovered that although I had broken the tooth with my shovel I had managed to collect both pieces. Now it just needs to be glued back together. On the second trip I managed to find two gator teeth and a mostly intact scute. I found a nice assortment of sharks teeth in a range of colors. While quite a few of the smaller teeth were in pefect condition all of the larger ones were damaged in some way.

Couple more pictures of the shark teeth. I'm trying to identify these teeth as they are the prettiest ones.

I believe I see a Great White in there. Not a common find. Love the shells too. It's awesome seeing them in the formation and not spread out on a road or in a pile.

Coco, yes I belive the shells are Pliocene in age. Believe it or not my friend actually found a welk that was larger.

Daniel, that great white is the first one I've found and when I found it I thought it might be a strange looking meg. It wasn't until I posted it on the ID forum that I learned it's true identification. Very happy to have finally found one! This is the first time I've seen fossil shells in mass quantites that were't in a parking lot and it certainly made an imppression.

Thank you everyone for the compliments!

Kara

By the way, at the shell museum on Sanibel, they had a display with a number of shell pit type fossil shells under a black light--you could see the original patterning on the shell, even though it was invisible under natural light.
