mooflyrock
Found this in a wash near (but not in) Petrified Forest Nat'l Park, along with a fair amount of other petrified wood. I'm pretty sure this piece is petrified wood too. What makes it especially interesting to me is what appears to be some sort of plant impression. Anyone know what it could be? Fossildude19
To me, this looks more like a piece of chert, with some cross sections through shells, and a bryozoan imprint. Let's see what others have to say. I'm not sure how a leaf impression on wood would even happen. Thanks! I'll be curious to hear what others have to say as well.
DPS Ammonite
The Shinarump Member of the Chinle Formation which occurs in and near the Petrified Forrest contains lots of chert with Paleozoic fossils. Some of the fossiliferous chert comes from the nearby Permian Kaibab Limestone. See pages 62 to 77 in link to USGS publication. http://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0690/report.pdf 1 My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.
