icycatelf
Decided to check out the trail next to my house after a heavy rain and found these. I think they're just siderite nodules (hence the orange coloring), but just making sure they aren't something... nicer. The first two attachments show a small hole in the center of the flatter end of each. The rest just show other angles (plus a large version of the pic above). Casual surface-collector and Pokémon fan.
Peat Burns
I'm not saying this is what you have, but your pictures look a lot like the "bog iron" I have recovered from wetland sediments in N. Indiana. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bog_iron There are no true bogs in your area, but maybe some seeps or other wet areas? Just an idea to explore if other ideas / possibilities (siderite, industrial by-product, etc.) don't pan out.
tmaier
I was going to guess Sparkplugus edselii, but now I'm on the side of bog iron or siderite.

A rusted spark plug crossed my mind as well! Casual surface-collector and Pokémon fan.
