Ahoi

Creative burst continues. I found some piece of driftwood to put my whales on and I made some progress with the Narwhale. The human swimmer is now physically present, not only photoshopped, thanks to shapeways.

Still missing are one representative beaked whale and of course the grand Cacholot, the Spermwhale. I can´t find detailed references for those.

Cheers

J

Narwhale complete.

Although  I never thought I would get thaf far, I began building the last two of my collection of Whales:

A small individual of Berardius bairdi and a medium Spermwhale.

I plan to make the latter in mid dive, pondering the exact pose:

Nice work, you should make a minimuseum out of this!

If you're a fossil nut from Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Redondo Beach, or Torrance, feel free to shoot me a PM!

Thanks Macrophyseter.

Minimuseum, yes. Guests at my place get shown the collection. I also pondered lending my whales to the zoological museum of my city if they want them (it´s a big one)

Didn´t you write something about your 3d modelling?

Where you talking about digital or "material" modelling?

My method for realising 3d models after drawings works especially well with whales, because their vertebrae are quite simple compared with more gravity-challenged lifeforms, and their spinal and lateral processes are conveniently arranged at a right angle. You can see the steps on the first page of this thread.

For all but the Humpback- and Spermwhale I had the skulls 3d-printed, the postcranial skeletons are handmade. The human was taught to swim in Blender.

Here comes the next step of my Cachalot, after glueing the lateral and dorsal views of the spine together with some wire, I bent it into a more dynamical pose and started skulpting the centra of the vertebrae.

Best Regards

J

I finally succeeded in taking enough photos of a sperm whale skull to reconstruct it photogrammetrically.

The result is in the printer right now and I am looking forward to complete my biggest whale yet.

physeter18.thumb.jpg.adf5d50bf0c1512233796c83b1cd80ae.jpgAhoi,

the printed Sperm whale skull arrived, and after some painting, glueing the halves together and adjusting my wooden jaw I am quite content with the result, only ribs and pelvic bones missing now. the squid bone might be a little to big though...

ready for now!

As with all my whales, the ribs are to thick proportionally, more like sirenians. Maybe I will find the motivation to remake them in some tougher material togehter with other detailwork.

But until then, what do you think?

Thats more or less the completion of my whale series.

Aloha!

Good news everybody!

Aetiocetus is nearly complete! Orca body, handmade flippers, selfmade composite skull.

In my family portrait I marked in orange what is stll missing. mainly a lot of fiddly ribs.

Aloha.

Thanks again Ynot!

A friend reminded me that Balaenid whales where missing in my collection.

The 3d printout of a bowhead whale skull lay around waiting for some time, but now I started building a skeleton.

Last Parts for the aetiocetus are being printed right now.

Janjucetus, Platanista, Berardius and Kogia still need a lot of tiny ribs and flippers. Kutchicetus will be some work.

But I think, cetacean diversity is quite well represented by now.

3 Yers ago i wouldn´t have thought that I would get this far.

Cheers

Ahoi

closer to the finish.

Aetiocetus and Balaena still need pelvic bones. I know that Bowhead whales do posess a rudimentary femur and sometimes even tibia,

I wonder about Aetiocetus though. The more detailed reconstructions I´ve seen show remains of limbbones, but have these been found?

Sounds logical to me that they still had them.

How much do you think is plausible?

The bases for these two are fragmentary fossil whale vertebrae.

Ahoi,

Some new whales.A beaked whale, a sketchy Remingtonocetid, Janjucetus, and afain the beaked whale acompanied by Kogia sp.

Skulls for Remington and janjucetus are digitally modelled by me.

Back where I belong, with the whales.

It will be some time, Megaladapis is in the printer, the baleen whales got their share, so I finally have a go at the macroraptorial Spermwhales.

Do not know exactly which one it will be, probably close to Acrophyseter. But except from size they will not differ so much in my humble level of detail. So it may be a Livyatan 1:40 scale instead.

Base is Orca NMML1850 from Morphosource.

Aloha,

J

I really love your self-made models, they are much, much better than ones online! Can I suggest a Livyatan melvillei skeleton with a Zygophyseter body plan?

Aloha.

It seems that I never build what I plan to build.

While on a non-fossil project, a model of the Discworld and Great Atuin, I relocated the parts for Caperea, the pigmy right whale. They are supposed to be the last surviving cetotheria. I had prepared the spine some years ago,  and when the 3d printed skull arrived couldnt find it.

Now there iit is. Just have to make those strange ribs and some flippers.

Best regards,

J

Ahoi,

here is another whale. Caperea marginata, the pigmy right whale. Not a fossil, but the last surviving cetotherium it appears.

A strange whale it is, more ribs, broader ribs, making it look a bit like a sirenian.

My reconstruction is based on one foto of a museum mount, I suspect that the ribs should point more backwards though.

Among the living groups the Blue and Grey whale will have to wait till I have more room. Maybe some macroraprorial Spermwhale will be next.

Non- cetacean mammals like Megaladapis and Ceratogaulus are also still in the pipeline.

Just in case you wondered what kept me so long from building skeletons, I present Atuin, apparently not Great Atuin, otherwise I would not have been able to use a single bedsheet as background.

Aloha,

J
