Mahnmut
Hello together, I started building a replica of a humpback whale skeleton, Megaptera novaeangliae based on the following data https://sketchfab.com/models/81dd3871b6fd4722a3ba2d2d5a15f4e4 Many thanks to Idaho Virtualization Laboratory- and to Christine Gabriele who is the keeper of the original bones. The attached image shows my process from digital 3d over digital 2d onto plywood back to some kind of 3d. There is a lot of detailwork to be done, but I think, it takes shape. Scale is 1/25th, same as in my Archelon, which will be finished when I find the patience to make the missing 70 digits. lormouth
Wow! You're very productive, nice job for this one and a lot of work to be expect for finitions. What did you use on plywood to give 3D ? Edited May 12, 2016 by lormouth http://paleoreplica.wordpress.com/
Mahnmut
Hi, thanks for the kind comments. Yes I have a lot of creative energy at the moment. I started modelling the centers of the vertebrae in some synthetic clay called "fimo", there are two kinds of this, the one I used now is very light but not good for fine detail. I plan to make a final layer of the other kind that is heavier but better for fine detail. It behaves much like clay. Lormouth, you are right, there is really a lot of detailwork left, skull, flippers and ribcage are placeholders for now. The vertebrae are two steps from finished I think. Whale vertebrae are less complex than terrestrial animals´. The method to make a solid ribcage and shape the ribs around it I learned from you, thanks! I´ll keep you updated. Mahnmut
Thanks! Taking shape. 1-2 days for spine and flippers I think, then I´ll see how to make the skull and ribs, that will be a challenge. Mahnmut
Thanks! starting with the Head. I tried the carving foam recommnded by lord trilobite, that´s really handy for parts that have curvature in more than one dimension, like the mandibulae here. Mahnmut
Thanks! I ponder making the ribs from carving foam also. Started on the head for now. Mahnmut
Hello again, I changed some mistakes on the skull, started on the ribs. now all thats left is lots of detailwork, but that will have to wait till after my vacation (hopefully with live whales) Cheers, J Try to learn something about everything and everything about something Thomas Henry Huxley
Mahnmut
Hello again, after some break and a visit to the living whales I proudly present the next steps reconstructiing the skeleton of Snow, the Humpback Whale. One flipper and one half of the ribcage are still missing, also the two frontmost ribs, the sternum, a lot of detail on the vertebrae, the hyoid bones and last but not least the pelvis. Still I begin to believe that I will finish this project to my satisfaction. Mahnmut
Thanks! It´s complete now, that means all parts are there. I´ll come back to it and correct a lot of details, smoothen the parts when I am in a less creative, more patient mood. For now that´s my humpback whale. I ponder trying a Spermwhale next, or an Orca. But that will again take some time.So feel free to comment on my whale, I for my part am fully happy with the result for now.
