Thanks for your kind comments!

Yes, I am proud of it.

And it´s getting company.

Next on the list is an Orca, based on "Hope" and beginning to take shape.

https://sketchfab.com/models/7fe4ae6ad95a46bfa235fc15cdb07c41

The skull is a 3d print I ordered, unlike with the humpback whale, that was completely handmade. To lazy for all those tiny teeth though.

Excuse the quick and dirty photoshopping.

Best regards,

J

Next step, one side ready exept for gastralia and chevrons. As with the humpback, the cervical vertebrae are difficult.

But i like the result, especially the printe skull. Still I may try to carve one just to be able to say I ,ade it completely.

Regards,

J

Thanks!

there will be fossils, I promise (I plan Pakicetus, Dorudon and maybe janjucetus if I get good references)

But those will be hard because of their less reduced skeletons.

For now, who can guess what my next whale will be?

Cheers,

J

The Narwhale has to wait, I just got a 3d  print of Quades great Pakicetus Skull.

(because this version is bigger than my chosen scale I use it as a standin for Maicetus, I hope you don´t mind).

Building the smaller postcranial skeleton is not easy, but faster. Less material to move. Still some legs to build (I am not used to that)

So finally my project fits here in the fossil forum!

Cheers,

J

That looks absolutely awesome.

Have you ever thought of making 1 to 1 scale models?

Thanks again!

that one is definitely at the lower limit of my size- range, I feel very clumsy tinkering with those ribs. The more I am impressed with the quality of the 3d-printed skull.

Concerning Whales, 1:1 scale models are an ongoing joke between my girlfriend and me, but I thought about trying small species 1:1, like Lormouth does.

A limiting factor is that I don´t  have a workshop as such, I make my models on the dining table. So all I can do is in the sizerange between a small rat and a big chicken.

For now I plan on some more whales in 1/20 scale, but after that I am open for suggestions. Also thought about 1:1 replicas of big insects.

Cheers,

J

It got arms now!

Looking at the closeup picture, I notice that the paint is quite thick and irregular, I will have to try to smoothen it somehow.

After some distractions I finished the Maiacetus-like creature. Although I have to say that on that little scale it is not much more than a 3d sketch.

Still, it gives context to the other ones.I think I am going to make the Narwahle next, but maybe some pinniped.

cheers,

J

Well spotted and thanks!

That´s why I called it an "odobenorecreation" ;) for now it´s just a bundle of placeholders and another nice 3d printed skull. Didn´t find a good dorsal or ventral view yet.

There will be whales again, I just got permission to use 3d prints for the Narwhale and a beaked whale skull.

And there will be fossil again, I plan making Dorudon at least.

And afterwards perhaps some more big seacritters, Like marine reptiles , fish... I find it quite fascinating to see them next to each other in the same scale. I also look for a 1/20 human skeleton that can be posed to swim.

That will be a lot of models hanging from my ceiling...

cheers,

J

Hello togesther,

as I am going to change my place there is not as much time for the whales, but on the other hand I got some really nice 3d data from the university of Alaska and had them printed. To build the postcranial skeletons may take some time, but here is a little preview.

The turtle is scanned and modeled by me (photogrammetry), the Basilosaurid is skulpted by me from another scanned skull. The others are from digimorph or university of Alaska , who kindly allowed me to use them for noncommercial purposes.

There are:

Generic Basilosaurid by me

Bowhead Whale ( Balaena mysticetus, University of Alaska)

Narwhale (Monodon monoceros, U of Alaska)

Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus, Digimorph)

Bairds Beaked Whale (Berardius bairdii U of Alaska)

Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus, IVL)

Sea leopard ( Hydrurga leptonyx , Digimorph)

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus, Digimorph

Loggerhead Turtle Caretta caretta by me

Best Regards,

J

Hello together.

After a long pause I finally found the time for some more tinkering.

The Skeletons  are modeled after this drawing:

https://www.researchgate.net/figure/283927735_fig1_Figure-1-Skeletons-of-the-Eocene-archaeocete-whales-Dorudon-atrox-and-Maiacetus-inuus-in

The ribs are really a pain in the chest on this scale, but the rest wont take long now, at least I hope so.

The skull is a Basilosaurus from Jesse at shapeways, scaled down to stand in as Dorudontid in order not to overcrowd my place.

Cheers

Thanks Doctor Mud!

The bigger one is about 40 cm long, what reminds me that it is supposed to be something like Masracetus, similar to Dorudon but bigger (pic), simply because building the little Maiacetid was so fiddly.

All the skeletons in this thread are around 1:20 scale, assuming a wide interindividual range (i.e. a smallish Humpback whale in comparison to a capital big Orca)

Cheers

After a long pause creativity hit me again and I can bring some long neglected projects closer to completion.

-I finally understood blender enuogh to bend a simple human skeleton into a diving pose, for now its photoshopped in, but if the printout works well I will have it in my hands in two weeks, together with a porpoise spine to scale (taken out of the nice free model by Geoffrey Marchal) https://sketchfab.com/models/add4d9494e7847fcad564fe183248126

It shows that my walrus is definitely on the big end of their sizerange. (slightly over 4 m in my personal scale)

I also got some ready made miniatures to represent the other eras of aquatic life. Luckily, they all fit more or less into my rubbery scale.

The Ichthyosaur (something like Ophthalmosaurus but slightly bigger ;) ) is from Geoworld Seamonsters and there is a lot to improve about it. The Mosasaur and Plesiosaur they offerr are sadly beyond help. The Eurypterid and Placoderm fish are from Kaiyodo.

Cheers,

Jan

Ok, finished my improvements on the Ichthyosaur and the Masracetus.

Time for a group picture.

The Penguin is from Kaiyodo, all the others are by me. The Ichthyosaur is from Geoworld, shoulder girdle changed by me.

Cheers

J
