ynot
I have been cleaning the matrix pieces that I have found at Sharktooth Hill. Thought that Y'All might like to see one from start to finish. I chose a pathologic Cosmopolitodus (Isurus) planus. Here are front and back pictures as found... Five minutes later...another tooth appears. Five minutes later an unseen crack removes most of the excess matrix and another tooth appears (Fish this time.).. More.... Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." ynot
A little more cleaning and some super glue to stabilize the teeth (so they stay in the matrix.). some more cleaning and cut a base.... Stabilized the base... And remove some more from the back... More... Edited May 13, 2016 by ynot Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." Fossildude19
Nice one, Tony. Interesting when they are still in the matrix. ynot
Wow Tony, are those color patterns typical of the finds from that site? Thanks Paul, Yes they are, but the 2 orange ones came from an area of the slow curve that is called the "fire zone" because of the fantastic color of some of the teeth that come out of there. minnbuckeye
To me a specimen in matrix looks so much better than one standing alone. Your pics are great examples to substantiate my opinion. With that generalization said, matrix that shows evidence of human intervention do not fit in with my likes. How does anyone "finish" matrix so that it looks natural again after we have finished exposing our specimen. I have not mastered this as well as Tony obviously has. TNGray
As an alternate method, I use dilute white glue and simply pour it over the entire piece. It seems quite stable and is invisible. Super glue or Paleo Bond is probably stronger and more permanent.
