Need help with Granton Quarry bone I found

Recommended Posts

I found this very small bone in a piece of shale from Granton Quarry in the G4 section of the Lockatong formation. It doesn't look like any fish bone that I have found before,,,But that doesn't mean any thing since I'm no expert in this area. It measures 4mm in length and is black . The fish that I have found in the past seams to have a coating of shale residue and when sometimes removed can expose white bones of the fish. I took the photo with my Dino-lite and tried to take the best pictures at different angles Any help would be great.

Tony,

You're welcome. The bone looks a bit broken, so I'm not sure - it kind of looks like alot of things, - but I am having a tough time making an exact match.

My first thought was either pelvic bone or some part of the skull - maybe an ectethmoid, or a broken bit of the basal first dorsal fin plate.

Not sure though. Wish I was more knowledgeable about the individual bones.

Regards,

Regards,

After looking at the first link you posted and from the first few figures I thought it might be a pelvic bone or part of the skull, ectethmoid as well . What you thought as being broken is still in the matrix and I was wondering if I should try to uncover some more of the bone with a needle..any suggestions. It might help with the ID.....Thanks again Tim. You as always have been a big help ...And congrats on becoming a Moderator .

Tony,

Not sure how much luck you will have with prepping with a needle.

It would be slow going - some of this shale is hard.

May require air abrasion to prep out further.
