Anyone Kind Enough To Offer Some Help W/invert Sites In Florida

Dear Members:

I'm going to be back in Florida at the end of May (starting the 23rd) after a many-year absence (I was last there in 2001 for my 25th h.s. reunion!), and I was hoping to get in some fossil collecting during the week I'm in the area. I'll be based in central Florida, not far from Sarasota). Nothing fancy - just a site or two. Seems like most of my old contacts have dried up and no one I've contacted "cold" has been able to give any information.

So I'm hoping there's a kind soul or two here who might be willing to share locality info w/me.

My collection is almost exclusively invertebrates and, though it seems hard for folks to believe, I'm really not all that excited about finding bones or shark teeth. Mollusks, esp. gastropods, corals, echinoids, etc. are more than enough for me. I've also been studying microfossils for decades. (I've been collecting since the early 1970s.) To help save everyone time, I already know about Venice Beach, the Peace River, the Caloosahatchee R, and Vulcan Quarry.

If anyone would be willing to share some advice about invert sites, I'd be hugely grateful for your help!

Many thanks -- and all best,

Wendell

I must say, I am thrilled to have an invertebrate collector join this board. There is just simply not enough of them here.

As far as sites... Calhoun County exposes the Chipola Formation in quite a few places... I have heard Tenmile Creek and Farley Creek are excellent places for invertebrate fossils. I found a link by quickly searching it that was interesting. Click here. I'm not sure exactly where you will be staying...That may be too far for you to go, but the inverts there are very, very nice from what I have seen.
