Barerootbonsai
Hi all don't know if I have done wrong but I cleaned parts of spikes I cased in Blue Lias (Charmouth). With boiling water from a kettle. Worked a treat. Hope this helps. Nick
JohnBrewer
Glad it worked but more than a bit risky! 1 John Map of UK fossil sites

Fossildude19
Using heat in any way, shape, or form can be bad for fossils. Use with exteme caution. Years ago, ... I once attempted to split some very hard but well stratified shale by baking it in a 350 degree oven for about 1/2 an hour, then removing from the oven and dumping the shale into a garbage can filled with cold water. The results were spotty, at best. Besides the loud snapping of the shale as the temperature changed rapidly, the splitting ranged from partial, to explosive, and not really worth the effort.
