sandgroper Posted May 29, 2016 Share Posted May 29, 2016 G'day all, I recently returned from a fishing trip to Shark Bay, about an 800km drive north from where I live where I picked up these nice Oncolite fossils. The patterns are very nice and quite colourful, they would probably look good polished but I think I prefer their natural state. Just thought I'd share these couple of pics, Cheers, Dave. sandgroper Posted May 29, 2016 Author Share Posted May 29, 2016 The fishing went well mate, plenty of big pinkies, mackeral, tuna, trevally, cobia, tailor, estuary cod and loads of sharks. .........Those oncolites would look great on a floor as polished tiles, might take a trailer when I go next! I am curious about some of the angular/polygonal structures in them as the oncolites I've seen are mostly spherical....hmm...I'm wondering how they develop or what they are composed of.... I'm wondering if that is some kind of stromatolitic structure or is something else going on that causes that? Cool finds--I'm liking them alot. sandgroper Posted May 30, 2016 Author Share Posted May 30, 2016 Thanks for the comments Chris, I've heard these described as Oncolite Stromatolites and there are many fossilized Stromatolites in this area. Shark Bay is one of a handful of places that has living Stromatolites, it is an area that just has the right conditions for them to still survive, it is warm, very sunny with the right salinity levels in the seawater as the bays are quite shallow.
