Fossil Found in Ecuador

Recommended Posts

I recently returned from living in Ecuador, South America, with a fossil that I found while at one of the beaches there (Canoa) and I am looking for some one who might be able to identify what it belongs to/ or came from/ and how old it is.

It looks like a toe or maybe the tip of a tail...?

I have attached detailed photographs.

Thanks so much for the help!

It does indeed look like part of a crab claw as Harry suggested. Very cool looking whatever it is.

Here is a chela of the giant hermit crab Petrochirus diogenes (not likely a match for your specimen - this one is extant from the Caribbean) for comparison of the surface structure.

The resemblance is good, so, there is no need for the dimensions (looking at the background writing as reference). Good work, everyone !

Thanks for all of the comments- and for the brightening and enlarging of the photos!

It measures roughly 1 1/2" x 1" to 1/4" at the tip.

The texture does strongly resemble the giant hermit crab- but I've never seen a crab claw that was flat on one side- and the flat side appears to have lizard type padding on it. I also thought starfish initially but it lacks the tiny hair/sucker type texture that starfish have underneath as well.

You folks beat me! Failed to write down the name of the crab but here's a shot of its claw in an aquarium in Florida.
