300BLK
Supposedly, fern fossils are common around this area (southern Indiana) but not sure what rocks I'm even looking for. And as far as cracking the rocks open to expose them? I don't want to destroy a perfect sp.
Fossildude19
First off - get used to destroying perfect specimens. It happens all the time. It is kind of inherent in splitting fossils. You get better at it over time, and with much practice. I've found ferns in shales, sandstones, and mudstones. Concretions can sometimes have fern fossils, - think Mazon Creek. My best suggestion would be to join a local club to meet locals who share your enthusiasm. People with more experience of finding things in your area. It is probably the best way to get going in this hobby.
