Trilobite hunting with an 8 year old

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I'm a naturalist at a state park in western Ohio and my son is absolutely obsessed with fossils. He wants to be a geologist and is very enthusiastic about the subject. We have been to Caesar's Creek several times and have found a few fragments of trilobites, but have never found a decent one. All he wants for his birthday this year is to find a nice trilobite. Does anyone have any better locations in southwestern Ohio to look for them than Caesar's Creek? I would appreciate any help on the subject and any location information would also be appreciated.

Joining a local fossil hunting group will also help immensely.

How close are you to Cincinnati? Dry Dredgers is the group to join if you are close by. Most of their field trips are Cincinnati-centric. I live in Dayton and have gone on quite a few over the years.

We live in wapakoneta, we drive down to the south gate in Indiana, and found a few pieces of trilobites, but no complete ones. We were on the south east side of the road in the blueish grey wet shale, and we found lots of good fossils, but not much luck with trilos. I don't know if we were in the right spot, but we had a good time and found lots of nice fossils. We might try to get hooked up with the dry dredgers as it sounds like a great group!
