Year One of Collecting

Recommended Posts

In 2001 I was a 10th grader studying abroad in Hamburg, Germany and I saw a collection of Dinosaur eggs for sale in a window of a high end store. I don't remember what kind of eggs they were or how much they were being sold for, but remember standing there dreaming about one day owning my own Dinosaur egg. About a year ago I was having dinner with a friend who is also a fossil collector and he invited me to the Springfield, Mass. Gem and Mineral Show. There I purchased my first Hadrosaur egg and have been on a constant hunt since to expand my collection.

The last year has been filled with many ups and downs in the collecting world for me and I have learned so much. I have been swindled, lied to and tricked into purchasing fake eggs (remember my early posts on the four I purchased from Malaysia), but have also met so many more great people who are also passionate about this great hobby and now obsession of mine. I have had the opportunity to travel to shows across the country to areas I would have never visited and have seen things in the past year that I didn't know existed. My main passion so far has been eggs and that is what I will post today, although I have also collected a few other non-egg pieces that have appealed to me and my wife.

I want to thank all the members of The Fossil Forum who have helped guide me over the past year as I begin to build my collection and this thread stands as a symbol of my gratefulness. I apologize for not listing the scientific names of these eggs, but I'll tell you what I can. Lets get started!

Hadrosaur Egg

This is the first egg and fossil that I purchased.

Hadrosaur Egg

I love the detail in the cracking of the shell on this one. Eggs like this allow me to understand why these were once thought to be dragon eggs!

Very nice collection something to be proud of and a nice variety. That oviraptor with matrix is a gorgeous egg.

Saltasaurus Shell and Shell Left in Matrix

Multiple pieces of shell left in matrix, I may try picking this one apart myself to see what else is in there. Also a very nicely preserved fragment of shell. Some have told me they see bone on the underside of this one, personally I can't. What do you think?

I would leave it alone. The matrix adds real character to the fragments. I also do not see anything special.

A wonderful collection. I'm envious of the prep on the first Hadrosaur egg - as nice as I've ever seen. Likewise, the 1st Oviraptor is stunning. However, since you have more than one piece; I also think it's great that some are left in a state closer to "as found." Congratulations on assembling a first rate display. Are they housed in some type of case and on display as a group?

Both eggs were preped by Steve Hare.

This should be pinned as a fantastic reference and wonderful examples of what REAL FOSSILIZED EGGS look like.

Thank you for sharing this spectacular collection doc!

Best regards,

Paul
