Toddster
Found on Lake Michigan beach, southwest lower Michigan. About 1 cm across. Many rocks containing smaller ones were found. Ammonite?
ynot
I see no septia (dividing chamber walls) in this piece -- so I think it is a gastropod. Neet looking fossil. CraigHyatt
^What Tony said. P.S. I have now instituted a 1 minute delay in responding because Tony always takes about 45 seconds. ;-) Info: Craig Hyatt, retired software/electrical engineer Experience: Beginner, fossil hunting less than a year Location: Eagle Pass, TX USA on the border with Mexico, hot dry desert Formation: Escondido, Marine, Upper Cretaceous Materials: Sandstone, Mudstone, Shale, Chert, Chalk Typical: Thalassinoides, Sphenodiscus, Exogyra, Inoceramus Reference: http://txfossils.com/Txfossils.html

CraigHyatt
I call it the "gaffe delay" Yep. We'd be typing at the same time, and my practically identical post would appear seconds after his. Well, my post was either identical to Tony's or wrong. ;-)Instead of "gaffe delay" I prefer "faux pas de deux". ;-) Edited July 25, 2016 by CraigHyatt Info: Craig Hyatt, retired software/electrical engineer Experience: Beginner, fossil hunting less than a year Location: Eagle Pass, TX USA on the border with Mexico, hot dry desert Formation: Escondido, Marine, Upper Cretaceous Materials: Sandstone, Mudstone, Shale, Chert, Chalk Typical: Thalassinoides, Sphenodiscus, Exogyra, Inoceramus Reference: http://txfossils.com/Txfossils.html

ynot
Thanks for the replies, and for smashing my Ammonite dreams. Would You rather have Us lie about it, and make You look like a fool when You show it to someone that knows the difference? Can You post pictures of the whole rock? Fossildude19
Gastropods are just as cool in my book, and usually they are older than ammonites. JohnBrewer
That's a cool looking gastropod plate. Got to be worth polishing up, would make a fab display piece. John Map of UK fossil sites

Personal opinion... but I prefer the natural state of things! Some rocks do need to be polished but I would not polish this piece. Tony 2 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Toddster
I was only kidding about smashing my dreams. I really do appreciate the replies. I will get a picture of the whole rock, along with a few others when I get a chance. I was thinking about throwing a few in a rock tumbler just to see how they would polish up. They are wave worn anyway. Would that be the best way to polish them?

Tony I generally agree with you Tony but when it's a plate like this with probably unidentifiable fossils I think it's ok to polish John Map of UK fossil sites
