Southwestern New Mexico/Silver City/Gila Wilderness sites?

Recommended Posts

Hello. I'm moving to Silver City soon. Lived in West Tennessee all my life. I've always been fascinated by fossils, dinosaurs, paleotology, etc., but of course West Tennessee is not much good for fossil hunting. I'm curious about where I might go and what I might be able to find in the Silver City area. Are there dinosaur fossils? Any sites that are really littered with any type of fossils - fish, Permian stuff, whatever?

Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum. :)

Check out this website. The information is very old, but may be a good starting point for your research.

Specifically, the area around Grant County:

Google the formation names listed, and read all you can about the ones in your area.

You may want to join a rock/fossil/mineral/gem group, to meet like minded people who may know the ropes.

Also, sometimes the groups will get special permission to hunt regularly off-limit quarries and such. \

Good luck!

Regards,

Thanks y'all. It looks like Bull Canyon and Buckhorn are both close by and contain vertebrate fossil, with some aves also. Interesting.
