More Texas Ammonites from Benbrook

Well we had a fun hot trip last week as the temps hit the triple digits. But we were rewarded with some quality ammonites. It was a nice hike to a spot we researched but when we got their they had the place closed due to high waters. Well that didn't stop me and my girl!! We found a couple of small pieces but finally hit a good area that had about five nice and whole pieces just waiting for us! After everything was said and done we carried about 70 pounds of solid ammonites in their metrics.

Very nice preservation on those. Probably Oxytropidoceras sp. from the looks of the ribs. Sometimes they can have very tall, thin ventral keels. Don't try to remove the matrix from both sides at the center of the umbilicus, you'll end up with a hole because it gets very thin!

Amazing doushantuo! I really expected to see at least one of the 21 Texas Oxys among the 10 in that paper but of course paleontologists always agree on these things so there's certainly no crossover ;)

Twinlukers didn't say but I'm guessing they were collecting at the famous spillway. I believe it's Goodland Formation and it has produced all but a half dozen or so of the species somewhere in Texas. All of this assuming these aren't one of the other genera with similar looking ribs since we don't have a good look at sutures or any measurements. Otherwise there are also deposits of Kiamichi, Duck Creek, Weno Limestone, and Ft. Worth Formations around the lake so who knows. Once we know that maybe someone has gone to more trouble than I have managed and identified what species is (are) common from the site.

Thanks!! We were above the spillway on the south-east edge!!

They are different from the ammonites we find around the Dallas area.

But what's great about this area is the limestone seems to have more calcite in them making

Them harder then others. I love the cleanup and prep work. I have some nice tools that allow

Me to give some good detail. My Partner Rosie seems to do exactly the thing you warn about.

The Middle really can get to 1/4" or less.

These were 7"-12" pieces we dug. I try to keep a solid base so my friends that I give them to can

Stand them upright.

But thanks again everyone.

If you want some more Oxys come on the Dallas Paleontological Society field trip on the 27th. The ones we get in Oliver creek are well preserved and clean up very nice. You don't have to be a member to attend but you'll want to join once you meet this great bunch of fossil nuts. http://www.dallaspaleo.org/event-2290576

Wonderful finds and you have some very lucky friends! I really want to make another trip into Texas to go fossil hunting but I will have to do a lot more research before that happens. The one and only time I've been there I spent far to much time lost and picked the wrong time of year to go. I only found a few scraps of ammonite on that trip.

Thanks. How's the sulphur river these days? Next week are going their.

I take it you've hit a couple of our spots?

I'm hoping to find my first mastadon tooth or a nice vertebra from their. Any hot spots??

I'm at work now but it's a good time to go. The river has been getting enough rain to rinse the rock but not rise. If I was home I would probably wade the shallow water to the multiple large gravel bars at the 24 bridge close to Paris or go to 2990 and hike all the way to pickle creek. It's always good stuff that way if you are willing to make the long walk.

Nice finds buddy. Congrats

So are you going to be able to make it? We are going to stay at Cooper Lake but go hit three areas we have selected. We just might meet up with Bill as well as we will be in the area.

No sorry I'm offshore at work until Sept 1 then I'm having surgery so no fossil hunting for me probably until late Sept. :(
