The Abdounia beaugei is a different species. Need size and to know if crown has striations but looks more like a Brachycarcharias lerichei .

Cretolamna appendiculatta looks like a different species. I need a size.

Triakis sp. looks more like a Premontreia subulidens.

Premontreia subulidens looks more like an Abdounia beaugei.

Marco Sr.

Marco, the possible Abdounia is 4.5 mm and there does seem to be n striations on the crown.

The Cretolamna is 7mm on the longest slant

I have relabeled the other 2. Thanks once again.

I'm really interested in seeing the gar scales. In forty years of collecting the Aquia Formation I've only found two fossil gar scales. My son Mel has also only found two fossil gar scales. Gar are currently present in pretty good numbers in the Potomac River. I just brought home a skull, upper jaw and a good number of scales from one I found on the beach. The modern scales are white to cream colored.

Marco Sr.

Here they are.

That is so cool! I admit that I have been obsessed with the big teeth out of the Potomac but the tiny stuff is equally cool!

I like the big teeth for sure but the small ones are special.

Fascinating and overwhelming! I am in awe of the beautiful tiny fossils! This will be a great reference as I delve into the world of micros.

Don

The scales definitely look modern, not from the Paleocene.

Marco Sr.

Thanks Marco. They sure look different from the gar scales from extremely recent fish. But they are very nice looking, and keepers.

Abdounia wouldn't have striations. Size is small for a Brachycarcharias lerichei. Root doesn't look like a catshark or houndshark.

Based upon the size, root shape, what looks like striations I think the Cretolamna is a Striatolamia.

Marco the first tooth is right at 4mm. The second tooth is rather worn but is the right size for Foumtizia. I had the bag labeled as udet. catshark. So I think I will relabel it. Thanks.

Don

4mm would be really small for a Hypotodus verticalis. Maybe a worn intermediate tooth of a sandtiger.

Not all Foumtizia tooth positions have the evident small projections from the bottom of the crown like the specimen that I posted. However teeth like that show that the genus is for sure in the fauna. Your tooth shows other features of Foumtizia so I think that is a reasonable id for it.

I just looked at the scales of the modern Gar that I recently brought home from the Potomac River. They show a pretty wide variation in shape. I only have probably a hundred or so scales. I only took a small number of what was on the skeleton. A lot of the scales match your top largest scale. There are a few scales that match your lower left scale also. There are other scales with shapes different from what you posted. So I'm convinced your scales are modern.

Wow, I've missed a lot. I stopped looking at this forum a while back when they changed the look. I think i will start again. I'm glad you enjoyed the matrix.

P.s. Sorry this is so late and that I am bumping this thread so much.
