Petrified Toe

Rockhound

Recommended Posts

I thought this might have some significance. It was found today Northeast Arkansas near Batesville. I showed it to a biologist at a local college and he was stumped, said the skin looks reptilian. It's petrified with the skin intact. Honestly, I see a resemblance with the feet bones of a Arkansarus. Any thoughts are appreciated.

This looks like a coprolite to me.

Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt
behind the trailer, my desert
Them red clay piles are heaven on earth
I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt

This looks more like a hematite or limonite nodule.  Can you get a better close-up of the end in your last image?

I agree with hematite/limonite/goethite nodule. The crystal fracture pattern that radiates outward from the center of the object is diagnostic. It's a very nice mineral specimen.

Here are some better pics. It's not magnetic, so I don't see how iron could be a possibility. It's hard capture any 3D perspective with my camera, especially the area which looks like a toenail, lol. Here's the guy that was stumped, http://www.uaccb.edu/campus-directory/biology/vernon-hoffman , he didn't mention the possibly of it being a geofact.

It is definitely an iron based mineral specimen.  That doesn't mean it would be magnetic.  As mentioned, the radiating fracture is diagnostic.
