Recommended Posts

On Tuesday, August 30th, I had the pleasure of collecting with fellow members @Pilobolus and @Jeffrey P out in my beloved Rio Puerco Valley. I present a photo collage, from my point of view, of that great adventure with both old and new friends. Enjoy. :)

Great photos, thanks for sharing the experience. I was able to get a sense of the place, of course, it must be spectacular in person.

Great trip report! Loved all the pictures. Is that a collared lizard? I remember calling them 'mountain boomers' when I lived in Texas. :)

I loved it out West when I was there...Think I'm going to move either into New Mexico or Arizona someday. Thanks for the pictures and memory of a great part of our country. Nice finds by the way :D

Great trip report and wonderful finds. Congratulations Mike. Really lucked out on the weather. It was a great honor and privilege to be invited to collect in the marine Cretaceous sediments of the fabled Puerco with you and Brian. A dream of a lifetime. This was just one part of a weeklong vacation in the Land of Enchantment, but easily one of the highlights. You guys were part of a great time. Hopefully someday soon we'll get to do this again, together. I would like to add a few of my own pics. The last pic was a specimen found in a concretion that Mike spied sticking out of the side of an arroyo. He invited me to dig it out which I did. Then he helped me split it. Did more work on exposing it once I arrived home in New York.

@doushantuo, I am glad you enjoyed the photos, but why would you be my worst nightmare?

@Troodon, I find this area to be quite a beautiful place with excellent access to sites. There are a few places that a decent hike is required, but that just more wonderful scenery to enjoy.

@Fossildude19, I am happy you liked my 17,000 words. ;)

@snolly50, I try my best in my portrayal of the Puerco...but I agree, like much of this wondrous continent, you've got to see it with your own eyes.

@darctooth, every trip to the Puerco has been fantastic...this one just happened to be extra fantastic. :) Thanks for looking.

@Barerootbonsai, that site is now officially named "Smiling Cliffs"...Thanks for that! :D

@jcbshark, Thank you, sir...I am fortunate to have beautiful things to take pictures of.

@Stingray, I too love the West! Hopefully, many more adventures are in my future. Thank you for the nice comments.

@ynot, you are welcome. :)  Don't wait too long.

@JohnJ, can't be too far a drive. ;)

@old bones, it is a Collared lizard (Crotaphytus collaris)...one of many that day!

collared2.jpg

When I was a kid, I stayed with a friend in Edgewood, where I first encountered a collared lizard (that was impossible to catch :P). His mom called it a Mountain Boomer and told us about how they scream :o...totally untrue but a heck of a notion.

Thanks, Mike, for that inspiring report. It's a heck of a country, and world, we live in. Awesome. Wonderful photographs of a wonder-full place. Thanks for the view. With the terrific finds you all made, you three hunters could carry the monikers: Patience, Persistence and Perseverance.  I'm happy you all had a good day. :ammonite01:

Start the day with a smile and get it over with.

Here's a couple bivalve shells collected on that trip with the original shell material preserved. The one on the left I found. The one on the right (an oyster) was found by Mike.
