Fossils from Vlissingen

I was three times on a beach near Vlissingen, named "de kaloot" in the Netherlands.

Its a very good location for collectors because its not that used for tourism.

 

 

 

 

You can only collect there at low tide. I found some shark teeth, ray teeth, some bones and some bivalves.

 

The shark teeth are normally very small and not that nice ...
 

Here is my whole haul:

 

 

The best tooth is this 2.8 cm long shark tooth (Please help to id this find):

 

 

Another smaller tooth with a lenght of 1 cm is this one:

I am not sure with the ID ...

 

 

If you want i can take more detailed picture of the shark teeth ...

 

I also found some bivalves like this three Glycymeris:

 

 

A rare find was this Pectenid: (5 cm long)

 

 

In contrast to the location in Antwerp i only found one bone: (13 cm long)
 

 

Last but not least ... another good find:

 

 

A big fish vertebra with a size of 4.5 cm !

I love the huge fish vert. Just back from The Netherlands for a holiday but I was on strict instructions that even the word 'fossil' wasn't to be mentioned. Actually it wasn't that bad but it was a surprise special birthday trip for my wife so fossils were out. Next time I hope to have a root about and meet Olof and others from The Netherlands.

Too bad that you couldnt search fossils  But the nature is also very nice ...

The fossil material comes from the base of the Westerschelde. The Westerschelde cuts through layers from the Pleistocene , Pliocene , Miocene to Oligocene .

Your first tooth looks like a lower mako, Cosmopolitodus sp.

Beautiful fossils, as always !
I think the 1st tooth came from a Mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus), but this is just a wild guess.

Yes ... too bad that there wasn't storms before I collect there

I can't find the image now but ludwigia found very nice bivalves there during hard working tides ...

The sharks teeth may be broken and beach worn but the colors are beautiful.
