TNGray
Does anyone have experience with ultrasonic cleaning of small fossils?
JohnBrewer
I regularly do obviously providing the fossil and matrix can withstand it. It's a great way to remove crud in the nooks and crannies. My cleaner has 4 power settings, and 4 timer settings up to 480 seconds. It also has a basket which is useful for smaller or slightly more fragile fossils. It's amazing how much grit and mud is removed. I use mine with a small amount of wetting agent - dish washing up liquid works fine. John Map of UK fossil sites
Coco
I have a small model of ultrasounds tub with a small basket, but the basket isn't practical for the small fossils. Then I put some water in the tub, and I put fossils in a small plastic jar with some water and a drop of product to wash the dishes. I put this small jar in the ultrasounds tub and I run between 10 and 20 seconds to clean the small shells. Then, I rinse them Under the water in a small fine mesh plastic sieve to remove the small grains of sand. I dry then on some absorbing paper. You shouldn't use this mode of cleaning if a fossil is cracked because it is going to break because of the vibrations. ---------------------- OUTIL POUR MESURER VOS FOSSILES : ici Ma bibliothèque PDF 1 (Poissons et sélaciens récents & fossiles) : ici Ma bibliothèque PDF 2 (Animaux vivants - sans poissons ni sélaciens) : ici Mâchoires sélaciennes récentes : ici Hétérodontiques et sélaciens : ici Oeufs sélaciens récents : ici Otolithes de poissons récents ! ici Un Greg... Mike from North Queensland
I just purchased a cleaner so am interested in any info. But will only be trying the more common material until I get comfortable.. Mike D'Arcy
JohnBrewer
Using the basket makes the cleaning less aggressive, not that it's that aggressive in the first place. Always worth grabbing a chunk of matrix you can test on before you clean up fossils. John Map of UK fossil sites
