Hey Guys! So I know there is a Fossil hunting trip this Sunday coming up in GMR North Carolina. Is anyone on here close enough to there to let me know how high the creek is right now?? I know there has been tons of rain and I was just wondering if the water might go down by this weekend..? Thanks in advance!

Holly,

In my experience which is quite limited, GMR goes down fairly quickly after the rain stops and isn't elevated when other rivers/streams in the area are. Unless a bunch of the rain actually fell right in Greenville, GMR wouldn't be up. Certainly after 36-48 of the rain stopping it would be back to normal. If I was going on the trip Sunday, I would not be concerned about the level (unless we have major rains in Greenville between now and then.)

Just remember to wear sturdy sole shoes. There is a lot of broken glass, scrap metal and even some hypodermics in the sediment.

Good luck.

The Tar River at Greenville has risen over 5 feet since Wend due to the heavy rain there. I would not make a bet that GMR would be at a huntable level this weekend. And there is more rain in the forecast for today.

If the trip you mentioned is with the NCFC I am leading it. Right now the creek is too high. I am hoping it goes down by the weekend which is a possibility.

I just posted a topic about this that you might find very informative in regards to planning your weekend trip. I also agree, I think this weekend is definitely a bust, and GMR drains pretty slow especially with as much steady rain as we have gotten. Last year when we got that big rain system and the Tar river @ Greenville Hydro-graph was at 12 and 13 feet for 2 to 3 days in a row, it took over 2 weeks before water levels @ GMR to return to hunting conditions. I say this because I was out there twice a week during that time, anxious to see the fresh pickings and it receded about 2 1/2 feet per week after that system left the area. Its up to you however, but with the steady wind and rain, I wouldn't go. The hydro-graph is showing no signs if water level decrease, but steadily rising. Topography shows the the elevation of GMR varies in relation to the Tar River, but based off what I looked at you would have to go at least 4 miles or so up river to be anywhere in hunting conditions. I have yet to go that far upstream to say if the hunting is good or not. I hangr around Green Springs Park or behind the school mostly. Tons of great finds in those spots.

It would be nice if there was an active feed that showed the creek, like they have on some weather sites where people have a web cam with live feeds of there area. Possibly something wireless? like a trail camera that can be checked VIA satellite.

Yes, thank you for all of the info.. I may still try to do a little searching at some point.. I will def. let you know what I find or how the water is once I get there.

If it's to high I might just do some searching around and see if I can find any good new spots..?
