Ravenstarver
A very large Trilobite I picked up for cheap. I was told it was an Andalusian Trilobite which seems to be an outdated term. I was assured it was not restored due to being a flatter type of trilobite (even I know better than that) Also told it is from Morroco. I bought it because even if it is half restored I am happy with the price. As far as I can figure out it would be a Paradoxide but on closer inspection I am concerned there is a lot of plaster like material, unsure if these fossils look like that normally... Looking for any input Edited September 27, 2016 by Ravenstarver forgot text

Fossildude19
Welcome to the Forum. Your trilobite is supposed to be a Cambropallas sp from Morocco. These are quite often reconstructed, with bits of real trilobite being the starting point. More often than not, they are outright carved. Your trilobite looks (at the least), like the cephalon is most, if not all reconstructed, along with the left side of the thorax. Great care and prior research are required when you plan to buy fossils. There are many posts on this forum that explain what to look for. Basic rules are - Stay away from Moroccan Trilobites (although many are real., lots are faked) and Chinese Vertebrates. Ravenstarver
Thank you for the reply, I had my doubts but for $60 didn't expect much. Hopefully this adds to the catalog of fakes out there. They had a positive and negative there as well but it looked similar in construction. I have a few more fossils I picked up, hopefully they fare better to scrutiny. I've found Stones and Bones seems to have great quality items for future purchases. I've seen a few posts on recommended dealers.

Ravenstarver
Haha well in Ontario Canada I think I am pretty limited for fossil hunting. I have found a few small fossils in shale but that is it.
Fossildude19
Nonsense! Some of our most prolific hunters are from Ontario! You need to join a club to get out there for all the fossil opportunities. Regards, EDIT: Here is a good website for starting your research! 2 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks."
