HFVC Fossils
Help on ID, please. It is a small squarish piece from a plate or something. (Skull, turtle shell, tooth??) it is like a puzzle piece, and clearly fit into other pieces or sections on all four sides. it could be modern. And not a glyptodont right? I have found a few of those armor sections, they are much larger. you may be right about an armadillo, but doing a search, I can't find anything that comes close to showing me the bone segments up close. I'll look again tonight or tomorrow to see if I can put in the right search terms.

digit
3 hours ago, Uncle Siphuncle said: The latter looks armadillo-ish to me...Daspyus novemcinctus, perchance? I'd agree. It looks a lot like the Dasypus bellus osteoderms we occasionally find in the Peace River. This Pleistocene species was just a little larger than the extant Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus). I'd agree with Uncle in that the ossified dermal scute does appear to be modern and so D. novemcinctus would be a reasonably certain guess at the ID. Cool find. Cheers. -Ken
