soundbyte
I have no idea what I'm looking at, but it seems to resemble a spinal column. It was found near Keswick, Ontario, Canada.
Monica
Hi soundbyte! Welcome to the forum! If your specimen was found here in Ontario, then I don't believe it can be a spinal column since the rock around here is too old for those kinds of fossils. We usually find invertebrates, invertebrates, and more invertebrates Perhaps it is a crinoid stem? Monica
Fossildude19
Welcome to the Forum. + 1 for Crinoid stem. Crinoids were/are fascinating creatures. Neat find. abyssunder
Not a spinal column, but a very nice crinoid column. What is the date on the matrix ? 19 Sept 1981 or 1931 ? Rockwood
Sorry to be a wet blanket here, but wouldn't it be more accurate to say it's mostly a lumen cast ?
JohnBrewer
Crinoid stem for me too. John Map of UK fossil sites
Rockwood
Okay. It still leaves some questions though. Does that make the shape on the bottom a holdfast ? What explains the knobby appearance and darker color of the center ?
abyssunder
SAND BANK SNAKE ISLE LAKE SIMCOE SEPT 19 1981 - is engraved on the matrix, so it was found at Snake Island (Lake Simcoe). There are two "terminations" with the same character, so I think couldn't be two holdfast for one crinoid column. I think the stem has two types of columnals, the larger one with spines. Are the two concentric ? If not then I think you just argued my original case quite conclusively.
abyssunder
I think you're right. Mostly a lumen cast. Rockwood
Anyone notice the similarity in proportions of the lumen with that of the vascular system of a lycopod ? Convergence ?
