garyc
I've had this piece from the Brazos River pleistocene gravel for a while and finally got around to taking some pics. I think I see schreger lines, but maybe just growth rings of wood. What do y'all think. Hope the pics are clear enough.

DPS Ammonite
What is the hardness? Does a steel knife blade scratch it? If is it silicified wood a knife will not scratch it while a knife will scratch ivory. My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. garyc
It scratched pretty easily compared to pet wood. I guess river polishing can dull schreger lines?
JohnJ
I think it's an ivory fragment. The remnant schreger lines and the soft dull polish on the interior surface are my clues. garyc
Thanks y'all! I'm sure I've picked up and tossed away several others. This is the first piece I have actually thought might be tusk and bothered to bring home for ID. It's not much to look at, but will still go on display. Maybe I can replace it with a nice "round" piece.
