DPS Ammonite
Welcome to the Forum. What rock layer are they from? They sort of look like 2 valves of a bivalve with concentric ridges that enclose an internal mold of sandstone. I don't see any porous bone. 1 My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. wildchild33
Looks like shell material to me but I'm just letting you know the experts will want to know where, ocean, creek, mountains etc.and also measurements or pic with something to judge size and maybe a shot of the large end.

wildchild33
This is along the lines of what I was thinking. Goes by tree or purse oyster.

ALex pet
I also found few of the purse oysters you mentioned right next to the big piece . Here are couple more pictures. There is a line across the piece on one side and it looks like it used to have sharp points like on crab carapace or lobster. Thank you.

I think you have the right church, but the wrong pew. This looks like an Isognomen. The post looks more curved and pointed to me. I've seen one that can be confused with it but I forget the name.
wildchild33
It does resemble lobster/turtle but I think it looks nacreous so pretty sure it shell of some sort.

abyssunder
Mytilid bivalve would be my guess, something like Mytilus. 1 " We are not separate and independent entities, but like links in a chain, and we could not by any means be what we are without those who went before us and showed us the way. RJB
Yes, mussel shell, possibly Mytilus californianus. (spelling) RB
caldigger
Ya, we get some really huge oyster shells in our fossil beds. So your piece definitely fits the bill.
ALex pet
Thank you very much everyone. I will read more on it. Planning to get back in the area this winter for some more fossil hunting.
